A letter to the publication that asked for feedback after I unsubscribed

They might not do it again…

I don’t remember subscribing, when have I done that? I’m glad you are looking for writers, though, that’s really great, especially since I’m one of those. I’ve tried to submit several times so far through Medium, but have never received any response and I find that depressing. I might not try again, for I don’t like to feel depressed and ignored (a weirdo, what can you do).

I guess you receive hundreds upon hundreds of submissions daily and cannot respond to them all. I also run a publication. It’s much smaller than yours and I make sure to respond to everyone who submits, even with just a single sentence to thank them for their time and effort. They might not always appreciate my feedback, though, since I’m quite outspoken.

I guess I’m old fashioned, I miss the courtesy and politeness of the bygone times, like not ignoring someone who took the time to send something you asked for to you. Or perhaps I’m just incurably romantic. I don’t know. There are many publications that claim their mission is to make the world a better place. I do not see how ignoring submissions and writers after inviting them to submit fits the idea of ‘making the world a better place.’ It far more likely make many writers sad. But maybe that’s just me.

As for your newsletter, it’s very commercial. After reading it, I don’t at all feel that you are really into making the world a better place, it feels a lot more like you are into making sales. I know, I know, we all have to make a living…

Last but not least, I absolutely cannot stand listicles, just cannot stomach them, not to mention recommendations to steal someone else’s work and ideas (yup, you are guilty of publishing crap like that too), and that’s why I stopped following you on Medium. You asked for feedback, hope you don’t mind getting an honest one.

All the best to you, sincerely,

M.
