I’m glad you are willing to reconsider your reviewing habits. This really is a dire problem and I wasn’t exaggerating when I said that writers are giving up on writing and publishing books because of this issue.
Think of it this way — if writers were only rewarded when they published an absolutely exceptional book and most everyone else would go out of business and stopped writing, what would that do to literature?
What would that do those who have talent, just need to hone their skills but cannot get any feedback from their readers because their books are not (yet) exceptional and they then give up? What would that do to those who published a useful book but their sales suffer and they don’t earn anything from it because the book has no reviews since it’s not exceptional?
These are very real scenarios that are playing out every day. Also, it’s not easy to write an exceptional book and given how little reward writers get from their work nowadays (most of us already live under or at the poverty level), it’s truly a miracle that anyone even publishes anything of quality let alone exceptional any longer.
